Lots of people credit psychedelics with helping them think differently, but they could also help them become better at learning itself.
A new preprint from researchers at Oregon Health & Science University provides some of the strongest evidence yet for this idea. Rather than simply making rats more mentally flexible, psilocybin appeared to change how they updated their beliefs, selectively strengthening learning from positive outcomes while reducing the influence of negative ones.
If these findings translate to humans, they could help explain why a single psychedelic experience can sometimes produce lasting changes in behaviour.
The Experiment
Researchers trained rats to perform a probabilistic decision-making task where they repeatedly chose between two options with changing reward probabilities. Sometimes one option was clearly better than the other. Other times both options were equally likely to deliver a reward, creating uncertainty. This allowed the researchers to study not just learning itself, but how animals adapted when the rules of the environment changed.
Before completing the task, the rats received either psilocybin or no drug. At the same time, the researchers recorded activity from hundreds of neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex, a brain region heavily involved in decision-making, planning and flexible behaviour.
The biggest finding was that psilocybin changed how learning happened. Using computational reinforcement learning models, the researchers found that psilocybin increased the rate at which animals updated their behaviour after receiving a reward.
In other words, successful outcomes carried more weight. When something worked, the brain became more willing to incorporate that information into future decisions.
Letting Go Of Failure
The opposite happened after mistakes. Psilocybin reduced the extent to which unrewarded outcomes influenced future choices. Rather than repeatedly adjusting behaviour after every failure, the animals became less reactive to negative feedback.
This wasn’t blind optimism. Instead, the brain appeared to rebalance how much importance it gave to positive versus negative information. The researchers describe this as an asymmetric shift in learning, where positive experiences gained influence while negative ones lost some of their grip.
Interestingly, psilocybin’s effects depended on the situation. When the correct answer was relatively clear, treated animals made better choices than before. When outcomes were highly uncertain, however, they became more exploratory, trying different options rather than repeatedly sticking with one strategy.
This suggests psilocybin may help organisms adjust their strategy depending on how predictable the environment actually is.
The neural recordings revealed why this might be happening. Following rewarded choices, neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex became more active. After unrewarded choices, activity decreased.
At the population level, the brain devoted more resources to representing successful outcomes while reducing representation of unsuccessful ones. Interestingly, signals representing upcoming choices actually became weaker before an action was taken.
Rather than rigidly committing to one plan, the brain appeared to remain more open until new information arrived.
Learning How To Learn
This may be the study’s most important implication. Many theories propose that psychedelics temporarily relax rigid beliefs or “priors,” making the brain more receptive to updating its internal models of the world. These new findings provide a possible biological mechanism.
Instead of simply increasing plasticity, psilocybin may alter the rules by which the brain decides what deserves updating in the first place. Rather than treating every setback as equally important, the brain gives greater weight to successful experiences while reducing fixation on failure. In other words, it may improve meta-learning – the process of learning how to learn.
This is important because many psychiatric disorders involve the opposite pattern. People with depression, anxiety and addiction often become trapped by negative expectations, cognitive rigidity and excessive attention to failures. By shifting how new information is weighted, psilocybin could temporarily create a window where healthier patterns are easier to establish, especially when combined with psychotherapy or supportive environments.
That fits remarkably well with current theories suggesting psychedelics create conditions where the brain becomes unusually receptive to learning new ways of thinking.
The Bottom Line
Psilocybin may temporarily change the brain’s internal learning algorithm, helping it pay greater attention to what works while becoming less dominated by what doesn’t.
It’s still early days. This was a preclinical study in rats, not humans, but it offers one of the clearest mechanistic explanations yet for why psychedelic experiences can sometimes lead to lasting psychological change.
Perhaps the real gift of psilocybin isn’t simply seeing the world differently, but teaching the brain how to update itself more effectively.
